Ms. Ayusha Niraula interviewing Mr. Raman Pant, Branch Manager, Standard Chartered Bank, Baneshwore.

How far do you go back with Campion?
I was a student of Campion a long time ago. I was the second batch in Campion Academy in 1995/96 batch and I passed out +2 in 1998. Well, I was one of the best students in the college at that time. Then it was a single Campion Academy but now I think Campion has a lot of branches. So, I go a long way back with Campion.

What has happened since you have passed out Campion?
Well, when I was in Campion I did my studies in commerce, but later on my heart shifted to social work and hence I did my Bachelor’s in Social Work (BSW) from St. Xavier’s College. I believed it to be a proper discipline so I went ahead with it. But then again I did my MBA in Marketing from Kathmandu University. The whole idea was to combine management and social work and get into the development field like NGOs or INGOs. But while doing my MBA, I found Marketing very interesting and all of a sudden the prospect of Banking propped up; and, thinking it was a great opportunity, I jumped into it.

How did you get involved in banking?
Actually, before joining the bank I worked briefly for an insurance company- LIC Nepal and insurance and banking are pretty much the same. They are both financial institutions but also have lot of differences. I started working for Standard Chartered as a management trainee then moved on to become the assistant branch manager and finally now to the branch manager which was just recently in March 2005.

It’s been a while since you have been involved in this field, so do you intend to continue in this line of work or get involved in social work as well?
Yes, I do intend to continue in this field. It’s not that I let my years of studying social work go to waste because I do use what I studied in BSW here in banking as well. Yes you have to be good with numbers and accounting in this field but at the end of the day I can deliver something extra. Let’s say, for me, being involved in social work here in the bank helps a lot in my career, I think. So you will definitely see more of me in this field.

What is your definition of success?
You see, when you wake up in the morning and have enthusiasm to go to work and you WANT to go to work, no matter what field you are in, then I believe that the person can be considered to be successful.

So do you think you have been successful in achieving your goals so far?
Well, in certain aspects yes, but then again I think as a human being, we are never content with what we do. There is still a long way to go.

What do you enjoy the most about your work?
You see people have misconceptions about banking as it is just about numbers, accounting, profits, and so on. But the reality is that it’s all about managing your team. I have about 26 people in my team and the one thing is that I really enjoy about my work is team work and for me to be able to manage my team. Working as a team always gives me immense satisfaction and I absolutely love it.

Who or what has inspired you the most in your life to do better and move forward in life?
Well, there is a video clipping that they show us here at the bank. It’s about a blind man who completed a marathon. This has made an impact in my mind. After watching that clipping, I always get so motivated and inspired that I feel like the obstacles I face can be easily overcome and hence I move forward and do better.

Where do you see yourself in five years from now?
Standard Chartered Bank is an international organization and also the only international bank in Nepal. So because of that I believe that we have the privilege to go abroad and work in one of their branches. So within few years I would like to go out and work. I think it would be a great experience for me. Like the bank branch in Singapore.
