Campion College : MA Jiri Tour
Advancing the skills through the ethnographic
fieldwork.
The ethnographic field work of MA first year was scheduled from July 10 to
14, 2008. As per the schedule, the students of MA Sociology/Anthropology
took the route to the Jirel Gaun at Jiri (Dolakha). The sole aim of the field
trip was to develop the skills of students for the primary data generation
from the unfamiliar rural setting; to enhance the capacity to process,
analyze, and present the data independently. The team of sixteen students
accompanied by two faculty members (Mr. Amar Prasai & Mr. Surendra Mishra)
and a field facilitator (Mr. Krishna Thapaliya) were on the travel. They
were welcomed at Hotel Jirel Gabila by Mr. Keshar Jirel. After the short
refreshment, Mr. Keshar Jirel took the team for the site seeing of Jiri
Bazar, Jiri Technical School (CTEVT), and the airport. The next day, the
field work started in the morning. Students visited the Jirel village which
is an hour away from the base. They collected the data from 45 different
households. It was really interesting as well as taxing. After lunch, a
discussion and experience sharing session was held between students and
teachers.
In the afternoon, students were instructed on data processing, analysis and
presentation which continued till late night. The next day (July-12),
student in teams worked on data processing and analysis in the Lecture Hall
of the Jiri Technical School. After many hours of hard and comprehensive
work this challenging task was completed at 6 pm. After dinner, they went
for trial presentation. The last day (July 13, 2008) was very exhaustive.
Students began the presentation of the data and they displayed their
marvelous and unimaginable presenting skills. It took almost seven hours to
complete this Herculean task. After the lunch, student planned for the
entertainment. The evening was celebrated with the group dance. In the end,
the team returned home with happy memory of fruitful educational experience
and a pleasing journey in bus with their class friends on the zigzag road
and the scenic peaks by the flowing rivers.
